『I am sending this to you so that you can see that you are right about the Hachiko Coalition. They are hypocrites. Ruriko Yoshida says that she wants to help the animals but secretly she has applied for a grant to do animal testing on the cattle in the Fukushima zone.

 確かに、日獣の話のもってき方のほうがhonestではありますね。
 日獣が正規軍とすれば、ハチ公のやり方はゲリラです。

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
COOL!
Thanks!

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
you're welcome!!!

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
I will take a look at them.
I really hope we can get grant to conduct research on cows and pigs especially piglets and baby cows in order to save them.....

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Ladies: Just to bring you up to date...Ruriko Yoshida, Ph.D., is now our Director of Scientific Research for the Hachiko Coalition. Because both of us work in an academic setting, we decided to harness the power of academia and resources within this sector to try to find a solution or solutions to the animal catastrophe related to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant meltdown.

December 2Nancy Gothard
can we announce this on FB and more so Ruriko can we announce that Dr. Imamoto will be speaking?

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
We have been working on two things:
 1) Developing/modeling an emergency evacuation plan for livestock during a nuclear disaster and
 2) Learning from the animals (livestock currently in the affected zone) in relation to the effects of radiation.

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
I think we should contact them!! AVMA! Maybe we can get a grant!!!

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Nancy: Yes! I emailed Ruiko today and she said it was good to post.
Ruriko: yes!!! this is another source....you and Dr. Bolch

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Please do Thank you Nancy!!!!!
OK Maybe Wesley should contact them but if you would like I will send them email on Mon.... What do you think?

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
posting about the conference is good for the coalition. A science component is important...
Ruriko: You contact them!!!

December 2 Yvonne Yoshida
Ines: have you seen this information already? I put it in one of my articles: http://dedicatedtothemysterysurroundingthe2tsunamidogs.com/2011/10/21/it-was-no-mystery-what-needed-to-be-done-to-protect-the-fukushima-livestock-if-japan-needed-help-there-was-plenty-of-advisors-ready-to-help-but-the-govenment-of-japans-politicians-incompetency-d/
It was no mystery what needed to be done to protect the Fukushima Livestock. If Japan needed help,.

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Woman power!!!
Yvonne....l will read it....

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
YAP

December 2 Nancy Gothard
i would like to mention your names in the post too, Ruriko and Ines, yes?

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Thank you
and yes
Ines, I just sent email to Wesley and you (and Dr Imamoto) for this info. If I do not hear from him before on Mon I will send them email on Mon....

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
So, the modeling is something that includes algorithms and mathematics and running sophisticated programs with nodes, etc. Ruriko and a doctoral student at UF understand each other perfectly, so as soon as the student completes the program, Ruriko will summarize and we will begin to write the paper and begin the preparation of the presentation. We hope to give animal rescue first responders a tool to evacuate livestock when faced witha nuclear threat so that what happened in Fukushima with the unnecessary deaths of cattle, pigs, etc., will NOT happen again. This is our goal her. Also, Dr. Imamoto will speak of his assessment of the animals in the zone.

December 2
Nancy: yes, that is fine with me, and I am sure that with Ruriko and Dr. Imamoto. It's in the program. You can include the program.
Ruriko was the one who submitted the abstract, which got accepted.
Regarding the other project, Ruriko and I (and Dr. Imamoto) have been meeting with a dosimetry expert at UF (I use to work with him in the Department of Nuclear Engineering when I coordinated their graduate and undergraduate programs). His name is Dr. Wesley Bolch. He is well know in his field and is a member of international committees on radiation exposure, etc. He knows about the Fukushima issue.

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
In this project, we are trying to figure out how we can study the effects of the radiation on the already contaminated animals, ensuring at the same time that the surviving animals are left to live out their years in pasture, while being monitored and studies for certain effects of radiation

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
what we spoke about today during our meeting, was that livestock should have been evacuated early on to prevent irreversible and damaging effects from the radiation
but the goverment and tepco were slow to provide a solution, cattle were not evacuated
at this point, we also found out that cesium 137 is absorbed into the muscle in 24 hrs, so it was important to take the animals out, decontaminate them with certain compounds to render the milk and meat useful, instead of leaving them there for 9 months and having to euthanize them.

December 2 Yvonne Yoshida
Are you including, forgive me if you already mentioned this, the time period for the cesium to clear the body since cesium should clear after a time period. Or did i read that wrong?

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Yeah we have a good idea. They are reaching to the steady states within 24 hours or some places within 30 days.
We thought we could do that first but we realized today that they are already reached to steady states.

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Ruriko, explain to Yvonne what steady state is.

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
So instead we can actually study affects on infants and pregnant livestock

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
the graph...

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Steady states are states that chemical condition stabilizes....

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
yes...thanks.

December 2 Yvonne Yoshida
If the cattle are removed from the contaminated area, that is.

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
So if you intake secium or other radiation your organs would take them as their particles and instead of getting rid of them they stay inside of the body like in muscle.

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
So, Ruriko proposed studying the effects on baby animals and pregnant ones.
yes, that's right. Then the meat is rendered useless and they have to resort to euthanasia
correct me if I am wrong, Ruriko.

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
For already contaminated livestock reached to steady states it is very hard to clean thesre radiation out.

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
However, if these animals would have been removed earlier, it would have been easier to decontaminate them

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
Yes pretty much since it is very hard to remove contamination

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
yeah...

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
yes

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
So, there is a need for an evacuation model for livestock and a study on the radiation affects on the progeny of these affected animals still in the zone reproducing.
So, I would say that this is why they are euthanizing so many of the cattle and pigs.
All this could have been prevented. It hurts to think about it.

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
Yeah....
How they did was so stupid

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
At this point, as Ruriko stated, it is hard to remove contamination, and giving Chelating compounds to treat the radiation would not be acceptable for food animals.
yeah...it was not right, but we are going to give them tools from the lessons learned.

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Yes we will try

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni

December 2 Yvonne Yoshida
I understand. And, no offense, but as a matter of principle, please do not use the word euthanizing, when it is coming from the Government of Japan. This is not euthanizing. ( sorry, it is the mis-use of the word from what they are doing to the livestock). I have to say that. No offense.

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
We can post on FB that the HC affiliated scientist or the HC's division of Scientific Research is actively working on ways to learn from the fukushima accident as it relates to animals and their welfare.

December 2 Alma Cruz
Hello everyone: And shouldn't part of prevention of having the same catastrophe occur in large animals, shouldn't the model also address compensation for losses of Livestock and what formula to arrive at figures for compensation. There must be a formula too. I think the Japanese Govt should compensate the people for loss of income, loss of cattle, pig, etc and the many years of loss profits because they didn't rescue farmers animals in time.

I just came home and saw some of the Hoshi photos Ruriko sent from November. Hoshi, Leo and his team are heroes. Now they have resorted to mountain bikes which really limits how much food they can carry, meaning more volunteers have to go with them. I guess you can walk over some of the sand bag barriers. There are some very good photos in that zip file.

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Hi Alma!

December 2Yvonne Yoshida
In the study of the radiation effects on the progeny, how is that determined? what are the testing methods used?
If this is soft tissue, then how is that to be measured?

December 2 Alma Cruz
Hi there. You girls are great on this project with the professors, the radiation experts and the veterinarians. Ruriko, did you hear back from Dr. Imamoto regarding what the vets are currently doing in the zone?

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Alma: There is a paper that sort of addresses the economics of the Fukushima catastrophe. Ruriko, it's one of the ones I sent.

December 2 Yvonne Yoshida
Methodology of the study?

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
But, yes, that would be a good study for an economist. Perhaps my husband can do that! LOL!

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Alma I have not
I will ask him one more time

December 2 Ines Aviles-Spadoni
for the off-spring study, we are still developing that...we just spoke about it today....But Ruriko's skilled at statistics, optimization, mathematics, biostatistics, so I am sure we can come up with something...between her and Dr. Bolch.
So, that's what Ruriko and I are doing.

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
and have been doing
my kitty is next to me and he is so soft....
sorry...that was totally random.... LOL!
Thank you, Alma!!
Ruriko is a BRAIN!!!!!!
Smart woman.
who loves animals!!!!!!

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
thank you!!!
u too!!!

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Oh, you're welcome. I mean it.
Well, so each of us in the HC have our special niche
We all play an important role to keep things going, to keep this coalition alive

December 2Ruriko Yoshida

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
it's all for the love of animals.

December 2Nancy Gothard
Ruriko is a brain! For the record I failed grade 9 math and never took a math class again!

December 2 Alma Cruz
Thanks Ruriko, I would like to know whatDr. I knows about what the VAAFA is doing vetwise and if indeed they are preparing to go into the zone or is that all just talk. Ruriko, Hoshi put something up on his page that I don't understand.

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
thank you!!!

December 2Yvonne Yoshida
So, you are still developing the part about measuring the lasting effects from parents exposed to radiation in the offspring or progeny?

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
I will chech later, Alma

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
I'm not the best in math either.

December 2Alma Cruz
Okay.

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
In grad school, it came sort of easy because I was doing it all the time then came statistics.

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
it is fun!!

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Ruriko: Once, I broke my pencil in anger and ripped a page out of my stats book and cried LOL!
Then, I realized that I needed the page and taped it together
I passed the class with a low B

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
For me it was a game!!!!!

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
but I am glad that I know what the meaning of 95 confidence interval is when i read the papers

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
LOL

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
or maybe I wrote it wrong..please correct me.
if math is a game for you, you are a BRAIN, my dear.

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
Thank you
I will check HOSHI's post in a sec so will be back

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Yvonne: Yes...that is still in development.

December 2Nancy Gothard
I can't even calculate a tip properly at a restaurant without using my blackberry calculator.

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
LOL!!!

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
I cannot calculate at all!!! Arithmetic is not my thing I cannot add

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
I get lazy and use a little tip card.

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
mathematicians cannot compute tips.... usually my hubby does whenever we go to a conference dinner with famous mathematicians

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
But you can do stats and optimization, for goodness sake!!!

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
Alma, is this it?
これはいい試みです。個人も利用できるのかな?
城南信金「東電から電力買わない」 別事業者から購入へ
www.asahi.com
 「脱原発」を掲げている城南信用金庫(東京)が2日、本店など大半の店舗で来年1月以降、東京電力から電力を買うのをやめると発表した。天然ガスなどを中心に発電する別の事業者から電気を買う。「東電の負担が減

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
Ruriko: LOL!!!
When I was in grade school, I needed tutoring for math.

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
If so then he was talking about protesting by not buying electricity from TEPCO but a different company....

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
But I did good in Algebra and Chemistry 1 and 2, which had a lot of math during my undergrad.

December 2Ruriko Yoshida

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
I think what helps me the most is using formulas...can't go wrong with that

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
I love math but not arithmetic

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
ah, there is a difference....

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
BIG difference....

December 2Ines Aviles-Spadoni
yep.
OK lovely ladies, I am going to sign off.
going to take a shower and then relax with my husband and kitty on the couch....need to relax my brain, eyes and body. Everyone, try to do the same. We can pick this bck up this weekend. A big hug to everyone. I'm glad we are all working together.

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
HUGS!

December 2Alma Cruz
Ruriko, I meant the post with the pig. Hoshi asks for volunteers for something. It's posted in Hoshi Family I believe. Does Hoshi need more volunteers to go with him?

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
Yes and he needs people who know about pigs.
or livestock

December 2Alma Cruz
Dr. Imamoto does he have an assistant to send?

December 2Ruriko Yoshida
I do not think so....

December 2Alma Cruz
Jon Oso(注:ハチ公の創設者で、PayPalの社員だと聞いています。) just posted on the conference! Nancy can you please ask him for the Pixar contact? I've asked and he hasn't responded.

December 2 Nancy Gothard
Ines and Ruriko: for your paper is there any mention of euthanizing animals to study radiation? I just need to be clear. I meant to ask multiple times and its escaped me as it was financial earnings season at work.

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
I do not think we talk about euthanizing them. We are writing on the plan to evacuate them outside of the exclusion zone as soon as possible.
ALso for another research with wesley we will try to save them not kill them
this is all we can do to save them (especially babies)

December 2 Alma Cruz
Ines had said earlier that there was no need to kill them to study radiation as researchers could study everything they needed to know from the existing living animals, i.e. blood samples, hair and other body fluids. They could do biopsies if needed but no need to kill. You want to rescue and save in a sanctuary so that the short and long term effects of the radiation are followed. That's what I understood.

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Yap this is why Dr Imamot and Dr kakizaki are important persons to have. We will not hurt them

December 2Alma Cruz
Thanks Ruriko.

December 2Nancy Gothard
Thank you! Just wanted to be absolutely clear! I appreciate it.

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Alma, Dr Imamot replied. He said his group was out. They cannot go in to the exclusion zone. But Dr Kakizaki's group can still go in.

December 2Alma Cruz
Oh, that's great that Dr. Kakizaki can go in. So why not his own group? Does he know if the officials are letting NPO groups in now or is that not true at all? What are the vets going into the zone for?

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Yes he is one of the research group in Kitazato university
Not for NPO's but University. Basically they do not allow any groups except research groups. This is why I am trying very hard to get a grant so that we can go in to rescue them.

December 2Alma Cruz
A grant for University of Kentucky?

December 2 Ruriko Yoshida
Yeah and U of FloridaAccording to Dr Imamoto, the city of Minami Souma will let the university outside of Japan willingly.

I ganna go to bed.....
Good night

December 2Alma Cruz
Goodnight. Tomorrow when you get a chance could you tell me if you get a grant, when would you know if you got a grant?
